Object - level visual information gets through the bottleneck 3 of crowding

چکیده
44 Natural visual scenes are cluttered. In such scenes, many objects in the periphery 45 can be crowded – blocked from identification – simply because of the dense array of 46 clutter. Outside the fovea, crowding constitutes the fundamental limitation on object 47 recognition, and is thought to arise from the limited resolution of the neural mechanisms 48 that select and bind visual features into coherent objects. Thus, it is widely believed that 49 in the visual processing stream, a crowded object is reduced to a collection of dismantled 50 features with no surviving holistic properties. Here, we show that this is not so: an entire 51 face can survive crowding and contribute its holistic attributes to the perceived average of 52 the set, despite being blocked from recognition. Our results show that crowding does not 53 dismantle high-level object representations to their component features. 54

متن کاملCrowding—An essential bottleneck for object recognition: A mini-review
Crowding, generally defined as the deleterious influence of nearby contours on visual discrimination, is ubiquitous in spatial vision. Crowding impairs the ability to recognize objects in clutter. It has been extensively studied over the last 80 years or so, and much of the renewed interest is the hope that studying crowding may lead to a better understanding of the processes involved in object...
متن کاملMulti-level Crowding and the Paradox of Object Recognition in Clutter.
In everyday life, we are constantly surrounded by complex and cluttered scenes. In such cluttered environments, visual perception is primarily limited by crowding, the deleterious influence of nearby objects on object recognition. For the past several decades, visual crowding was assumed to occur at a single stage, only between low-level features or object parts, thus dismantling, destroying, o...
متن کاملTHE CALCULATION OF MEAN CIRCLE SIZE UNDER CROWDING Calculation of the mean circle size does not circumvent the bottleneck of crowding
Visually, we can extract a statistical summary of sets of elements efficiently. However, our visual system has a severe limitation in that the ability to recognize an object is remarkably impaired when it is surrounded by other objects. The goal of this study was to investigate whether the crowding effect obstructs the calculation of the mean size of objects. First, we verified that the crowdin...
